Hauora wānanga for Matariki
In 2022, Matariki was officially recognised with the creation of an annual public holiday. This acknowledgement of the turning of the year in te ao Māori provided an opportunity to consider the mātauranga around this significant event as a time for reflection and renewal.
For Matariki, our associate, Tuihana Ohia, ran three hauora wānanga to help us think about our current and future wellbeing. These workshops provided a process for drawing on the strengths of the past, both our own personal learning as well as the learning we inherit from our tūpuna and ancestors, as well as our aspirations for the year ahead. The workshops addressed:
Pūmanawa and hauora
This was about pausing and reflecting on our pūmanawa, superpowers. We were encouraged to utilise our senses, of look, feel, smell, taste and sound, to understand and appreciate that our hauora is unique to each of us.
We took time to remember and reflect on the inherited taonga, gifted to us by our ancestors and tūpuna, respectfully acknowledging our whakapapa.
This was about recognising the greatest contributions and skills each of us bring to our whānau and our team. This challenged us to reflect, articulate and create awareness around our contributions to those we love and work with.
When and how do we give love to whanau, mahi and self and reciprocate love? Much of our korero on this was around a focus on self, as we continually serve, care for, and consider others.
Hau, vital essence
The previous reflections helped us each articulate and build our own whare of hauora. Again, we drew on our senses, our mahi, and our whānau, underpinned by aroha.
Manawatia a Matariki. During Matariki, we pause and reflect on all that we have added to our kete, our whare of hauora. As we reflected on the past year and the growth and challenges we experienced, we considered our aspirations for the year ahead.
The PowerPoint slides contain the information and questions that supported the korero throughout the workshops.
